Ps. 40 I waited PATIENTLY!

Verse 1: I waited patiently!-- Psalm 40  I couldn't get past the first three words.

The definition of patience- is "the capacity of calm endurance". I read through the Psalm several times but I continued to revert back to that first verse. Can I say I wait patiently? My first thought about waiting patiently is to 1. sit down 2) let God work.

Except- I am currently reading about Nehemiah helping the people rebuild the walls and the gates of Jerusalem. In Neh. chap 4 vs.13-23 it tells they had opposition- physical threats, gossip, slander, discouragement, and their nobles participated in what we now call human-trafficking. Many reasons to quit. Nehemiah had many challenges. He prayed and fasted. He told the people to continue, so- "the people did their work with one hand and held a weapon in the other". Their patient waiting- involved doing. To me this Psalms encourages us to trust God, to pray and to be industrious as we "wait patiently".

The wall was completed (Nehemiah chap 6 vs. 15) and in verse 16 "When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and lost their self-confidence, because they realized that this work had been done with the help of our God."

Read through this Psalm with calm endurance. I hope you will prayerfully glean and if you reread the first verse more than once, know you are not alone.

Blessings on your day,

Nelle
